The land that is now West Cape May was first inhabited by the indigenous Lenni Lenape people who thought of themselves as the “Original People”. Now paleogenetic science has confirmed their belief. About 12,000 years ago when Homo Sapiens first spread around North America during the Mesolithic era, the ancestors of the Lenni Lenape came to North America across a land bridge that once existed where the Bering Strait is now.
